Melbourne

We arrived in Melbourne at 8:15 am Australia time on Wednesday, Oct. 18,  on a 16- hour flight. We left LAX on Monday evening Oct. 16. Crossing the International Date Line, we lost a day. We were met by our Tauck tour rep at the airport and ten of us traveling with Tauck were transported to our  5 star hotel, the Langham. Even though it was still early in the morning, we were able to check in within the hour so we had plenty of time to clean up and relax. In the evening Bob and I walked a few blocks to meet our tram restaurant which we had booked before we left the states. Our official tour doesn’t begin until Thursday evening at a welcome dinner and reception so we arrived early and booked a few tours on our own. The tram restaurant was a multi car tram fully equipped as a restaurant. We dined while seeing the sites of downtown  Melbourne. It was a delightful evening filled with good food, free-flowing drinks and lovely views all the while riding in a tram throughout Melbourne. We love Melbourne so far. The weather was perfect and the people are oh so friendly!

Wildlife Park and Foodie Tour

Friday, Oct. 27, 2017 Today was a very busy day and a lot of fun! We left at 7:45 am for Featherdale Wildlife Park outside of Sydney. It was really a unique experience. We were able to feed the wallabies and kangaroos who were just walking in our pathways. We also saw cassowaries, wombats, dingos, Koalas and much more! I had my picture taken with a koala again ( I'm a little obsessive) and we were able to see many Koalas in the trees munching on leaves. I could watch Koalas all day, From there we departed at 10:30 for Sydney and our foodie tour. We picked up a local guide at the Olympic Stdium where the 2000 Olympics were held. The park was impressive because all of the buildings are still used today. The city actually made money on the Olympics. Roland, our guide,  took us to several key places for some local specialties. A Bridge Climb and a Farewell Dinner

A view fro the Royal Botanical Gardens   Saturday, October 28, 2017 This was the last day of our tour although we are extending our stay for another day. I have to give a big shout-out to my my amazing 82 year-old  husband who climbed to the top of the Sydney Harbor Bridge! Bob and Michael(  a friend we have made on our tour) met two men from our tour (Bill and John) and they walked down to the bridge to prepare for the climb.  It was quite an experience.  They were outfitted in special suits and everything they had loose (such as glasses) had to be specially attached.  With a guide they climbed all the way to the top of the bridge and it took them about an hour and a half. I was amazed and proud of him. If you know me, you know there was no way I would even attempt that! Bob was very proud to have accomplished that feat and I am equally proud of him. Opera House and more!

Thursday, Oct.26, 2017 Our hotel is only 2 blocks from the Sydney Opera House. At 9:15 am we all walked there and had a fantastic tour inside the Opera House. What a beautiful and amazing structure. I wished we thought to purchase tickets for the symphony. Guess we’ll have to come back! It was very overcast this morning and rain was predicted for later in the day. It wasn’t the best day for pictures but we had no choice. After our tour we boarded a specially chartered boat just for our group and toured the harbor with amazing and fascinating commentary by a local guide. We learned so much about the history of Sydney. We also enjoyed a delicious  buffet lunch while touring the harbor. After the cruise we rode to  Bondi Beach and wandered around there for about an hour and a half.
